Question

How do I get a residential refund for sanitation charges?

Answer

In order to get a refund or credit of the monthly sanitation service charge, one of the following must occur:

  1. Where a charge has been made for sanitation service and no water and sewerage charges are billed by the Sewerage & Water Board during the billing period.  The person paying the sanitation service charge may make a claim for refund by filling out a sworn application  for refund with the Department of Finance, Bureau of the Treasury -- Room 1W40 in City Hall (1300 Perdido St).
  2. Where a service charge was made during September of 2005. The person paying the sanitation service charge may make a claim for refund by filling out a sworn application for refund with the Department of Finance, Bureau of the Treasury -- Room 1W40 in City Hall (1300 Perdido St).
  3. Where are service charge was made for all properties which are unoccupied because of damage caused by hurricane Katrina (i.e., not repaired, vacant and using less than 100 gallons of water per month).  The person paying the sanitation service charge may make a claim for refund by filling out a sworn application for refund with the Department of Finance, Bureau of the Treasury -- Room 1W40 in City Hall (1300 Perdido St).
  4. Erroneous billed accounts in instances where Sewerage and Water Board bills for more units than currently exist.  Proof of the number of units will be required (i.e., a copy of the current liability insurance policy on the property in question).
